On the Fast Track: Social Class and the Transition to Adulthood

Session Abstract
This session focuses on the narrative experiences of school leavers and how the intersection of social class and education affects the way in which they experience their transition to adulthood.
Target Audience
Conference attendees across disciplines who have an interest in learning more about any of the following areas (a) high school leavers, (b) transitions to adulthood, (c) social class and education, and (d) narrative research are encouraged to attend this session.
Learning Outcomes
Session participants will gain insight into how school leavers, ages 18-25, experience their transition to adulthood. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear participant narratives and engage in discussion on how slow and fast transitions to adulthood are associated with socio-economic background and educational experience.
Session Description
The intersection of social class and education affects how school leavers experience their transition to adulthood. The stories presented by participants in this study correspond with Jones’s (2005) concept of fast track transitions. In the narratives collected, participants identified social class as one of the challenges they faced in their transition to adulthood and something that brought them to adulthood quickly, while it simultaneously limited their social mobility as adults. It is important to explore stories of transitions because they provide a way to capture how social and economic environments frame individual narratives and the personal and cultural resources on which young people are able to draw. These narratives of entering adulthood depict a more layered transition than has yet been described by most developmental theorists and make apparent that the “fast track” is the way some young people reach adulthood regardless of whether or not they are ready.
