The innovative strategies adult literacy leaders utilize to address the increasing demands for core education and literacy services in an era of scarce resources is explored.

Session Description
In recent years, the leadership of state and federally funded adult literacy organizations in the United States has been impacted by major shifts in the external environment. Organizations charged with providing literacy services which facilitate the economic mobility of low-income adults and families have been challenged with an increasing demand for core services in an era of scarce resources. This concurrent session will present research findings exploring the experiences of executive and program leaders of adult literacy organizations in navigating the most recent economic downturn to investigate how they are managing the rising call for services despite declining organizational resources. The innovative strategies these leaders utilize to meet increased demands for services despite decreased resources are critical to the survival of low-income adults and families in the contemporary society. This research presentation provides an opportunity for the start of a rich dialogue, both from a scholarship and a practitioner perspective.
