The Protocol for Safe & Affirming Care, Part II: Discussing SOGIE with Systems-Involved Youth
Workshop Description
How can we improve our child welfare and juvenile justice systems for transgender and gender-diverse youth? We'll address this question through reflecting on the lessons learned from pilot implementation of the Protocol for Safe & Affirming Care—a guide for systems professionals on how to better support LGBTQ+ youth. We will learn about the development of the Protocol and its implementation, and then apply these lessons as you strategize about how you can make your organization safer and more affirming. In Part II, we explore the importance behind discussing sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) with systems-involved youth, reflect on lessons learned from the Protocol pilot implementation sites’ efforts to do so, and work interactively to identify and address concerns regarding talking to youth about SOGIE.

Nicholas Oakley, Mr.
Presenter Bio
Nicholas Oakley is senior projects manager at the Center for Children & Youth Justice, where he oversees statewide reform efforts on behalf of LGBTQ+ youth involved in child welfare and juvenile justice systems. His work is based on close partnerships with professionals in juvenile justice, child welfare, law enforcement, and homeless youth services. Prior to joining CCYJ, Nicholas worked at a Seattle law firm representing youth and families in juvenile offender, dependency, education, domestic, and criminal matters.
Dae Shogren
Presenter Bio
Dae Shogren, MPA, is the LGBTQ+/ Disproportionality/Commercially Sexually Exploited Children (CSEC) headquarters program manager for DSHS Children’s Administration (CA). Before joining CA, she spent 20 years in the private sector supporting youth and young adults. Throughout her career, she has worked on behalf of the community’s most vulnerable and marginalized populations with a consistent integration through mentorship, partnering with key agencies, and leadership. Ms. Shogren firmly believes that when our young people are supported and nurtured, we all thrive.
