The Evolution of Adult Learning with CBE and PLA: Attracting and Retaining Your Adult Students

Session Description

Adult learners with some college and no degree made up over 92% of the 39 million Americans eligible for pursuit of higher education in 2013. Planning your institution’s adult student success will pave the pathway for survival and evolution in the ever-changing higher education landscape. National post-secondary enrollment decreases are due partially to a drop in high school graduates, but also from an economic boom for adult learners. How will your institution attract and retain adult learners better than competing institutions? This session will focus on leveraging Competency-based education (CBE) and Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) to strengthen adult learner recruitment, retention, and graduation. We will review adult learner enrollment trends and characteristics of post-secondary adult learners. CBE and PLA will be compared, contrasted, and synergized to envision how your institution may optimize its plan for both models. This interactive session will conclude with sharing best practices, challenges, and solutions.
