Using Hybrid Classes as a Beacon for Adult Student Engagement: Research Findings of Adult Learners' Perceptions Regarding Hybrid Classes

Monday, October 8, 2018 at 1:30 PM–2:30 PM EDT
Columbia
Session Description

Online education continues to have a large adult student population representing diverse learning styles and needs. As a recipient of the Alex Charters Research Grant, my research focused on the perceptions of adult students regarding their experiences in hybrid classes. The hybrid design format may serve as a beacon for improving student success in online learning. As educators, we can use the information provided from the perspective of the adult learner to improve curriculum, delivery format, and student persistence.
This session will examine the research results of a case study in which several themes emerged. The outcome of these themes, coupled with the needs of this student population group, indicate that the hybrid class format is of value to meeting student needs and providing opportunities for engagement that appeal to the adult student, and thus improve the likelihood of student persistence and success.
