The Multi-Generational and Nimble Campus: Fostering Institutional Readiness and Transformation at Winthrop University to Attract, Support and Serve Adult-learners
Session Description
With the emergence of a multi-generational, globally-intertwined and knowledge-centered workplace, higher education institutions must continue to innovate to serve all members of society, no matter their age, background, or experience. As a result, many colleges and universities are facing the challenge of realigning their academic programming, course delivery, and administrative systems to attract, support, and serve adult learners in a comprehensive way. Via this session, we present and discuss Winthrop University’s intentional progression to become a public comprehensive university that serves all learners. The approach used by the university administrators and faculty leaders to envision this broader ambition centered on re-envisioning program offerings, engaging in sustained dialogues with the entire campus about the institution’s future, examining operational realignment through strategic partnerships and soliciting buy-in from all of their key stakeholders. We will discuss lessons learned to date in implementing the two educational ventures and plans that leaders of the University have put forward to ensure early gains are maintained.

Brief Bio
Dr. Patrick Guilbaud is the Director of Adult Programs at the Graduate School of Winthrop University. In this capacity, Dr. Guilbaud coordinates the identification, development and implementation of degree completion, workshops, certificate and personal enrichment courses and programs at the University. Prior to Winthrop, he served as Distinguished Brown Teacher-Scholar in Learning Technologies and Visiting Faculty in the Decision and Information Science department at Stetson University and Program Director, Information Technology and International Education at Virginia Tech. Dr. Guilbaud has led numerous and globally-oriented education projects focusing on human capacity building, faculty development and distance education. He holds a MBA, Master’s Degree in System Engineering and Ph.D. in IT from the University of Virginia and a BSBA from the University of Florida.

Jack DeRochi, PhD, Winthrop University
Brief Bio:
Dr. DeRochi is Dean of the Graduate School in July, 2012. Before joining the Graduate School of Winthrop University. Prior to that, Dr. DeRochi served as Assistant and Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at Winthrop. Dr. DeRochi is a Professor of English, specializing in Restoration and 18th-century literature. His main research focus is in the field of 18th-century drama and recently co-edited a book, Impresario: Richard Brinsley Sheridan in Political and Cultural Context, which was published in December, 2012. He is a member of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and the Southeastern American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.
