Learning Cities: A Framework for Lifelong Education, Learning and Experience
Session Description
Learning Cities is a recently evolving concept encouraging cities to exceed their mandatory duty of providing education and training to constituents and instead develop a participative, culturally aware and economically thriving environment by promoting learning opportunities for all citizens. Learning cities encourage personal development, social cohesion and creation of prosperity.
LearnLong Institute (LLI) is a non-profit educational think-tank whose mission is to inform individuals and the public about relevant ideas and issues in adult, higher and continuing education and learning throughout every stage of life. LLI has created a Learning Cities model designed to actively engage local community colleges, adult education centers and municipal resources to foster development of informed, engaged, socially conscious, thriving communities. This session will illustrate the Learning Cities concept, provide examples of contemporary success stories, and describe a model applied to a large New England city that can be a beacon of light to the area.

Brief Bio
Rita Kenahan is an adult learning professional recognized for her inventive approach to accelerating learning in various healthcare and academic settings. Her unique faculty development initiatives are supported by her strengths in medical device training, group facilitation and presentation skill development. She earned a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University in Adult Learning and Leadership and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for LearnLong Institute and the Adult Higher Education Alliance. She is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston-Victoria and A. T. Still University.

Brief Bio:
Dr. Leodis Scott is an assistant professor of educational leadership at DePaul University-Chicago. His research and teaching interests include learning cities, quantitative research methods, and higher education-lifelong learning policy. Dr. Scott have numerous publications including an edited book in 2015, Learning Cities for Adult Learners (New Directions for Adult & Continuing Education) and in 2019 Quality of Life in Adult Learning (Adult Higher Education Alliance). He earned a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University in Adult Learning and Leadership.
