ACHE 2018 Concurrent Sessions

Continuing Education is Dead! Long Live Continuing Education!

Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 9:15 AM–10:15 AM EDT
Portsmouth
Session Description

This session is intended to be an open and honest conversation about the future of higher education in general and the long-term relevance of the Association for Continuing Higher Education in particular. Questions that we will consider include: Does the increasing emphasis in higher education on life-long learning make the distinction between “education” and “continuing education” a spurious dichotomy? Does the fact that there are now more “non-traditional students” than are “traditional” students enrolled in higher education programs necessitate a shift away from segmenting the delivery modalities for these populations? Will the traditional model of the academy with its emphasis on faculty lead governance be disrupted by new education models and providers? (Think Google U) Is ACHE still relevant? How should ACHE be positioned for the future? Will we keep pace with the changes, be a change agent, or cease to be?
