2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Type of Presentation

Concurrent Session (45 minutes)

Session Abstract

An overview of key findings from PIAAC 2012, including proficiency levels of U.S. adults as well as relationships between their skills and areas such as education, employment, demographics, and health.

Target Audience

The results of PIAAC 2012 are of interest to anyone who wishes to understand the current state of adult basic skills in the United States and 23 other participating countries. Such findings are of interest to the adult education community and of particular interest for program administrators, practitioners, and researchers currently focused on skills training and adult basic education. PIAAC 2012 also provides information on the skill levels of the employed and unemployed, and measures specific skills used in and out of work. These findings are important to researchers and policymakers focused on workforce development and the labor market.

Learning Outcomes

Results from PIAAC 2012 will provide policymakers and administrators with hard data in their efforts to implement policies and programs that encourage the development of skills and the optimal use of existing skills. This session will also provide the adult education community with the data they need to obtain more resources and expand their services. The PIAAC data will provide researchers with a breadth of information on literacy skills in the U.S., and this session will show them how to use PIAAC for their own research as well as how to access the data files and the online data tool.

Session Description

Presenters will detail key findings from PIAAC 2012 on the literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills of U.S. adults in an international context. These findings include estimates of U.S. adult skills by educational attainment, employment status, demographics (including gender, age, race, and English proficiency), use of computers, and health status. Trends with previous adult literacy surveys (IALS and ALL) in overall literacy and numeracy will also be shown. In addition to the direct assessment of skills, PIAAC also measures skill use in different contexts (work, home, and community). A comparison of the skills people have and the skills they use at work will provide deeper insight into what the demands of the labor market are and how the workforce is meeting those demands. A free online PIAAC data tool will also be demonstrated during the session to show researchers how they can use the PIAAC 2012 data for their own purposes.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
