This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Group Learning Projects: Assessment and Design

Session Abstract
Collaborative group projects are a hallmark with adult learners. This session will address strategies to assess group learning and design group projects based on research and practice.
Target Audience
The target audience includes adult educators who use group learning projects with adult learners. Teachers of adults from a variety of settings including community colleges, universities, military education, and human resource departments will find relevant information to apply to their practice.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of this session participants will have examined their own experience using group projects. Participants will gain insights into strategies and techniques, which may inform their own practice with group projects with adult learners.
Session Description
Group learning is a hallmark of teaching adult learners in the face-to-face and online environments. Research has shown that learners retain more when immersed in discussion or teaching others (Sousa, 2006). Group learning has further been used to in higher education, because it supposedly mimicked the workplace environment (McCorkle et al, 1999). However, research further shows that adult learners are frustrated by the group learning environment because of slackers and those less committed to the learning project (Hall & Buzwell, 2013). The presenters will discuss their research and experience with adult learners using group projects. Further, they will discuss strategies to assess the group learning process as well as the product.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
