Dental Workforce Development: A Tribal and Community College Partnership

Session Abstract
Development of dental education programs through a partnership agreement with a community college and Native American tribe will include information related to funding sources, affiliation agreements and workforce development opportunities.
Target Audience
Individuals and institutions interested in partnering with community agencies including; Community Colleges, Career and Technical Colleges, Vocational and Workforce Development, Health Education, and grant writers.
Learning Outcomes
Upon participation in this poster session learners will be able to;
1. identify key stakeholders involved in the development of a workforce development partnership between a community college and a tribal nation.
2. identify key components to be included in a partnership agreement.
3. identify possible funding sources for successful partnerships.
4. understand role of third party accreditation in development of partnership.
Session Description
This poster session will present an innovative approach to workforce development and meeting the dental needs of a rural community. The Community College was approached by the Tribe to collaborate on development of allied dental education programs to be administered by the College while being located within a Federally Qualified Health Center located within a newly developed Indian Health Services Dental Center. Uniqueness of this partnership includes being the first of its kind for allied dental education. Construction of classroom, clinical and laboratory spaces for educational programs and major dental equipment was funded by the Tribe. College retains authority over curriculum, faculty, students and patient care. Direct instructional costs are primarily the responsibility of the college; however, a minor fee is charged to the college to cover shared and incidental expenses. An additional partnership with the Tribe includes working with the state's dental school to include training for dental students.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
