2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Type of Presentation

Poster Session (45 minutes)

Session Abstract

Reflective journal writing can be an effective tool for students to learn while writing. Through reflective journal writing, students can connect previous knowledge with new material to develop academic skills.

Target Audience

Both instructors of any level and adult learners who are currently in college can benefit greatly from this session. The main benefits for instructors are :1) how to be effective using reflective journaling; 2) how to help adult learners connect their experiences with the material learned in class; 3) how to use reflective journaling as a way to enhance student processing of knowledge; 4) how reflective journaling provides opportunities to explore critical analysis of difficult material in class. For adult learners (including graduate students), reflective journaling can help students gain opportunities to communicate their thoughts and engage in self- assessment.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will be able to understand the process of exploring the different techniques used for reflective journaling. During the session, learners will explore the main advantages of reflective journaling such as: 1)enhancing active learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills; 2)giving adult learners a platform to freely express their thoughts and feelings and allows creativity; 3)developing learning process and writing ability while becoming independent thinkers. Learners in the sessions will also discuss how reflective journaling can help instructors teach adult learners over the age of 25 to filter, organize, apply, and reconstruct knowledge learned in the classroom through reflective journal writing.

Session Description

Many educators and writers believe that reflective journaling is a helpful tool for increasing a student’s analytical and critical thinking skills, yet many educators feel that much of the quality of reflection can vary between students. Although many college classrooms use reflective journal writing as a learning tool for problem-solving and thinking skills, the research indicates an unclear picture of the quality of learning that students receive from journal writing in the classroom. In this session, the instructor will discuss the effects of reflective journal writing in the classroom from both positive and negative viewpoints. Also, the session will explore the different rationales which can help adult learners connect with the course material. By doing so, adult learners can reveal their knowledge and learning skills in a way that incorporates their own experience along with content. Overall, adult learners can use reflective journaling to improve their academic and writing abilities.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
