Workshop Description

Navigating legal, medical, educational and other institutions to support your trans child can be a challenging task. This workshop will teach you the basics that you need to know about legal issues that frequently arise for trans youth, as well as how to identify steps that you can take to help them navigate these challenges. Topics covered include name and gender marker changes on identity documents, safety and access to education in schools, health care access, and legal developments affecting trans youth at the federal and state levels.

Asaf Orr, JD, National Center for Lesbian Rights
Presenter Bio

Asaf Orr joined NCLR in February 2012 as a staff attorney working on issues related to families and youth. In July 2015, he was named NCLR’s Transgender Youth Project Staff Attorney. As part of that project, Asaf engages in litigation, public policy, and informal advocacy to safeguard the right of transgender and gender-expansive youth to be affirmed and supported for who they are.

Mr. Alexander Chen, JD, National Center for Lesbian Rights
Presenter Bio

Alexander Chen works at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, where he advances trans rights through litigation and policy advocacy. He graduated from Oxford University and Harvard Law School, where he was the first openly trans Harvard Law Review editor, and worked at the DOJ, ACLU, and National Center for Transgender Equality. He clerked on the Ninth Circuit and S.D. Cal. In 2018, Alexander was listed in Forbes 30 Under 30 in Law and Policy.
