Adult female Undergraduates on Campus in Residence - An Exploration of their Lived Experience

Session Abstract

This session will explore the preliminary findings of a study of the lived experience of adult female undergraduates who live on campus including themes of resilience, self-efficacy, identity and motivation.

Target Audience

This session will be of interest to higher education professionals including adult program directors, administrators, mental health professionals and faculty working with adult students and/or those interested in the experiences of adult female undergraduates. While the study focuses on adult female undergraduates who live on campus, the session will be of interest to anyone working at an institution with a non-traditional aged student population. College counselors and mental health professionals will also be interested to learn about the impact prior life experience has on adult female students’ campus and academic experience. Administrators and faculty invested in supporting this student population will benefit from the discussion of overcoming adversity, emerging self-efficacy, and issues of motivation and a non-traditional identity that appears to be common in this population.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will be able to realize common experiences among adult female undergraduates that challenge assumptions regarding this population. While female students are the majority of undergraduates, and studies show adult students are high academic achievers, adult female students can continue to face challenges in accessing higher education due to societal pressures and family expectations. Once in college, these students experience struggles with self-efficacy and social integration in a traditional campus environment. Learning outcomes will include a more nuanced and thorough understanding of issues related to this population, and an increased ability to support and problem solve with this population.

Session Description

While this population is statistically successful academically and in terms of persistence issues including persisting barriers to and delayed access to higher education, as well as the emotional and psychological experience of being an older student living on a traditional college campus still remain. This session will explore the personal journeys of several adult female undergraduates who choose to live on campus and will touch on their desire to live on campus, levels of involvement as residential students, motivation to pursue a Bachelors degree, and how they understand their identities as adult students in a traditional college environment.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
