When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Adult Undergraduate Students: The Role of Student Identity for Recruitment and Persistence

Session Abstract

This session explores the key understandings and a model of student identity and its impact upon adults returning to college for recruitment and persistence.

Target Audience

This session will provide insights and understandings for individuals who work with or research adults in collegiate settings, as well as those who are interested in the impact of student identity on learning.

Learning Outcomes

1) Identify key influences for adult recruitment and persistence in relation to adult student identity
2) Identify the key elements of the “Adult Undergraduate Student Identity” model
3) Gain an appreciation of the cultural and social impact of adult life roles and contexts on adult participation and learning engagement in college classrooms, including the collegiate settings (intergenerational or adult only), the faculty, and student services support personnel for this model.

Session Description

Current concerns regarding recruitment, participation, and persistence of adult undergraduates often draw upon inappropriate models and understandings. This presentation will provide a broader and insightful set of perspectives regarding both the research and the practice of working with adult undergraduate students and the particular understandings and supports for their participation. The major focus of the presentation will be of a new model of adult undergraduate student identity (AUSI), drawing upon both theoretical supports, as well as past qualitative research of adult undergraduate student experiences in different higher education contexts. Because past undergraduate student discussions have been based in young adult development, full-time enrollment, and limited life roles, the exploration of the adult undergraduate is often muted or distorted by placement within these young adult models. This model will provide a broader context, drawing upon adult development and adult life roles, as well as the influence of parental, work, and community leadership roles
