It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. The Role of Identity in Adult Undergraduates' Higher Education Experience

Session Abstract

Development of a student identity is an important factor in students' HE experience. What role does it play with adult undergraduates? Social identity and self-categorization theories can provide insight. .

Target Audience

Anyone who works with adult undergradates (non-traditional students).

Learning Outcomes

Learners will understand that for adults, who come to the HE experience with multiple identities outside the academic context, that their ability to establish a student identity can be a vital factor in their adult undergraduate student experience. The development of a strong, positive student identity, may contribute to their ability to navigate college life more easily, and to persist in school despite the many challenges they face as students and in their professional and personal lives.

Session Description

The number of adult undergraduate students enrolled in higher education continues to grow, with institutions developing even more flexible programs to attract this growing demographic. Unlike programs for traditional age students (18-22) that seek to aid their transition to college, and promote development of a student (college identity) few HE institutions consider adult students' transition and / or (student) identity development needs or the role identity might play in adult undergraduate students' successful outcomes and their overall college experience. Administrator and faculty awareness of the role identity plays in adult students' overall experience and satisfaction with the college will enable HE institutions to improve services and programs geared to the adult student.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
