Program Summary/Abstract Description
Parent leadership and involvement is one of the guiding principles of dual language education. This presentation will address two of the effective practices from the guiding principles of dual language: (1) approaching families from a strength-based perspective; that is, understand that all families have many strengths to help their children, and (2) establishing parent advisory committees at the district or school levels.
Participants will learn about two parent led committees (RISE, Radical Intervention for Student Education, and Mujeres Unidas Activas) in a dual language school, how each group formed, and the structures for operating the parent group. The groups coordinate school-wide events that meet the needs of their communities and school.
The presentation will be led by the school social worker, principal, and school equity chair. Resources for teachers, student service specialists, and administrators interested in parent advocacy and leadership will be provided.
