2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

This session examines the development of Appalachian adult learners from the lens of transformation. Results illuminate particular areas of adult development and suggestions for adult educators to facilitate teaching.

Target Audience

Because this research looks into the development of Appalachian adult learners from the perspective of transformation, anyone who is interested in transformative learning theories and applications might be interested in this session. Adult educators who desire to understand Appalachian people will find the session appealing. Because this research also deals with the concept of conflicting cultures in the context of globalization, researchers who are interested in culturally responsive teaching will benefit as well.

Learning Outcomes

The literature offers little information about the development of Appalachian adult learners’ from the transformative perspective. The presenter will share information gathered from such adults through in-depth interviews regarding their transformative experiences and then share insights and invite input regarding suggested facilitation techniques. The research results will provide suggestions for adult educators to understand and facilitate the transformation of Appalachian adult learners. The session should also result in a better understanding of the transformative experiences of particular culture groups.

Session Description

In the literature, transformation has been regarded as an important lens for examining the development of adult individuals and groups. Under globalization, the Appalachian adult population faces new opportunities and challenges that might go against traditional values. This session first introduces the background, purpose and significance of the study, including what the literature expresses about transformative learning and research related to the Appalachian adult population. Next, the presenter will introduce the research methodology, results and conclusions, as well as the implications and limitations of the study. During the session, the presenter will display original excerpts of interview responses. After the presentation, audience participation will be encouraged with discussion questions.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
