Program Summary/Abstract Description

Bilingual programs follow such a variety of designs that most require their teachers and administrators to create curriculums specifically for their school. This can be a complicated and daunting task, especially for new teachers, administrators, and entirely new programs. This session provides bilingual educators with tools to create curriculums tailored to their needs. I will present approaches that streamline the task of adapting monolingual curriculums to bilingual settings. Each one can be applied to a variety of settings and subject matter.

One approach is from a public Two-Way bilingual (Spanish/English) immersion school in New York City, adapting a literacy program. Another is from a private One-Way Foreign/World Language (Portuguese/English) Immersion school in São Paulo, adapting a writing program. The third uses specific technology tools for pre-teaching and increasing parental involvement in bilingual settings, particularly for Math and Science content.
