Transformative Practice for Community Advocacy and Promoting Self-Sufficiency

Session Abstract
This session will discuss how transformative learning theory can foster positive social outcomes in community casework practice. Integrating critical reflection, dialogue, and critical thinking is essential to encouraging behavior change.
Target Audience
This session is relevant for educators who work in community settings including social caseworkers, adult basic educators, student support services, non-profit agencies and community advocacy associates. Those working in settings that promote behavior change through counseling and education programs should find this presentation informative regarding approaches to engaging in problem solving strategies, transformative practice, and positive social change.
Learning Outcomes
The learners will gain an understanding of how transformative learning practices can affect outcomes in community education and development. Learners will be provided with strategies to engage clients in problem solving, self-advocacy, and positive personal change. This session will introduce alternative approaches and processes for working with clients to identify problems, generate solutions, and address barriers to achieving self-sufficiency.
Session Description
This presentation will provide strategies to help improve outcomes and promote self-sufficiency in community support settings. Insight from adult education practice and experiences from community casework will provide a foundation for improving practice and engagement. This session is important for those who work with individuals from disadvantaged social backgrounds. Identifying stereotypes and transforming the current ideologies regarding culture and poverty will be discussed. In addition, suggestions for improving outcomes include: promoting problem solving, self-advocacy skills, and engaging in critical dialogue.
