Program Summary/Abstract Description
This presentation will examine pedagogical practices used by teachers in two-way immersion programs in closing the reading achievement gap for African American students. A set of common pedagogical practices were identified after analyzing nine classrooms across two North Carolina schools in which the percentage of African American students proficient on end-of grade reading exams was higher than the state average.
Drawing from the quantitative work that exists detailing African American student achievement in two-way immersion programs, this study used qualitative methods to create a holistic picture of instruction across the nine classrooms. Data collection included classroom observations, document anaysis of lesson plans, and teacher interviews.
This presentation will include a brief overview of reserach methodology and then dive into high-yield strategies that can impact instructional practices in dual langauge programs to ensure academic success for all students.
