Program Summary/Abstract Description

Immersion teachers often feel overwhelmed attempting to fit in oral production and language goals in addition to the components of a standard balanced literacy program. This presentation will share how to effectively weave oral output into each aspect of a balanced literacy program and address both language and content goals simultaneously. While many schools across the country use this approach, there is a missing piece for immersion classrooms. In order for immersion literacy to be truly balanced, each aspect of literacy needs to be supplemented with language objectives and an intentionality for oral language production. We will share how to transform ordinary written work into oral production tasks to achieve maximum language proficiency. Our content-based, communicative and task-based instructional practices are the missing piece to the balanced literacy immersion puzzle.
