Program Summary/Abstract Description

This session will focus on bridging math instruction throughout the year in a 50/50 two-way dual immersion program. In our program, math is directly instructed in Spanish. We believe in transfer of knowledge and have thoughtfully and intentionally planned a bridging math lesson on the English part of the students’ day. During these lessons, English vocabulary is explicitly taught, and concepts for which students have a strong knowledge base in Spanish are bridged into English. Using a case-study of 3rd grade mathematics standards, we will show how we pulled apart the standards to intentionally bridge our math instruction across the two languages. We will show examples of bridging lessons, share our successes, and reflect on how we have changed our instruction throughout the year to adapt to the needs of students. We will also provide examples of how literacy and language function have been included in the instruction of math in the target language. There will be an opportunity for questions and professional reflection at the end of the presentation.
