Having a successful program relies on the teachers and the support available. The Utah Dual Language Immersion Program provides teachers with an annual institute followed-up by annual state professional development trainings as well as district-level support and classroom mentoring and coaching. The institute focuses on language and culture proficiency, six key instructional strategies, grade-level literacy training, content-based support, and cultural adaptation for new guest teachers. The institute is followed-up by two state PDs based on teacher needs, often organized by grade-level focusing on proficiency targets. At the district level, teachers receive grade-level training on specific instructional strategies that they implement in their classrooms with the help of coaches. At the school level, teachers collaborate vertically strengthening teachers’ understanding of the program’s vision from grade 1 to 12 grade, providing support and empowering individual teaching strengths.
