Program Summary/Abstract Description
Effective principals are essential to the success of dual language immersion programs. Their characteristics and practices determine the degree to which they are able to support and sustain the programs at their schools. A qualitative case study was conducted in two districts in California where dual language immersion programs were well-implemented across multiple sites. Through interviews with principals, teachers, and central office administrators, the study revealed that having a strong grasp of the principalship alone is insufficient to support schools with dual programs. Principals with dual language strands promote a climate of bilingualism and cross-cultural understanding in their communities. While site leaders employ the tenets of both transformational and instructional leadership and depend on connections with district partners, parents, and staff, they also exemplify a special set of qualities and practices to create a cohesive environment where all students can thrive.
