Travels of a Young Sea Dayak to the Land of Opportunity: An Authoethnographic Study

Session Abstract
Reflecting and making meaning on the learning experiences of an international student, this exploratory study discusses how an indigenous student make cultural connections as a universal lifelong learner.
Target Audience
Educators, adult education students, faculty members, and trainers who are interested to know how an international student construct and make meaning from the experience learned in the United States.
In addition, international students and adult educators who would like to see another perspective of how another international student link his culture to his experience, and share their own learning experience in the United States.
Learning Outcomes
This study illustrates the rich cultural background of the Sea Dayak Tribe in Malaysia, tells a story about a young man’s educational and cultural journey away from home and into a foreign country and provides an internal view of how international students make meaning of new cultural experience as educative practice.
Session Description
While this study is still at its exploratory stage, I do see a great potential to further amplify the effort especially in a community with an increasing number of international students through the advancement of social media application. This study would be a great tool for international students to adapt and learn from a new environment by making meaning from their daily experience. They are able to benefit from education in a culturally sensitive manner which utilizes, promotes, and enhances awareness of indigenous traditions, beyond the standard Western curriculum.
Besides that, it would also benefit adult educators who seek interest in knowing how an international student learn by linking his or her culture and apply it to his or her current learning experience especially in the United States.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
