An Analysis of the Success of Foster Children and the Implications for Adult Education Practice

Session Abstract
This session will presentation the results of a recent qualitative study of factors effecting the academic success of adult foster children after their aging out from the foster care system.
Target Audience
Participants at this session should include: 1) Adult educators in social service agencies who service foster children and foster families; university faculty members who teach in adult education graduate programs who teach graduate students who deal with family-related issues; and other professional who have a professional and practice-related issues concerning the education and advance of foster care children.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of this session participants will:
1) Become aware of the scope of the issues which are relate to the foster care system in the United States and how they are related to adult education practice;
2) Apply the results of a recent research study about factors effecting the factors which enhance the adult development of former foster children:
3) Consider what educational initiatives in the years ahead which may be appropriate for the remediation of these issues.
Session Description
Presently, there are more than 430,000 foster children in the United States (US, HHS, 2010). Despite this, little information is available about what factors impact the life-related and academic success of these young adults. Accordingly, this qualitative study of an examination of how and why foster children overcome the complications of their life issues was conducted. Themes concerning perceptions of foster care matters and the relationship to adult education have been identified and will be presented.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
