Program Summary/Abstract Description

Research shows that language learners need structured opportunities to use academic language across the curriculum. This session will introduce highly effective and research-based strategies that help integrate culturally and linguistically responsive practice and build academic language for all students. Students need meaningful opportunities for engagement, movement, interaction and collaboration. Teachers will learn how to incorporate language acquisition techniques into effective engagement strategies such as think/pair/share, numbered heads together, four corners, musical shares, tea party and choral response. These strategies will be introduced with added elements for language acquistion including a structured and explicit process, sentence stems, repetition, and comprehensible input. Videos from bilingual classrooms and live demonstration will show the power of these strategies and their flexibility to be applied to any content area and in any grade level (pre-K-12).
