D2c Relating Unbanked Prepaid Debit Card Use and Opening a Bank Account
Key Words
prepaid debit card, unbanked, previously banked, bank account, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation,
Short Description
This paper is interested in prepaid debit card holders who are currently unbanked and the likelihood of them opening a bank account in the near future given how recently they became unbanked. We test the main hypothesis in stages: first, that prepaid debit card users are more likely than non-users to open a bank account, and second, that prepaid debit card users more recently unbanked are more likely to open a bank account than those who have been unbanked for longer periods. Applying the Theory of Planned Behavior, we use multiyear data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to predict the intention of becoming banked with the use of prepaid debit cards while moderating with period when last banked, attitudes about banking, alternative financial service transacting, and controls for age, race, education, employment, household size, and metropolitan area.
