Short Description

Because of the harmful consequences, indebtedness among students is a well-studied subject that requires more investigation. Graduate and postgraduate students are a forgotten population that has not been studied in terms of their use of consumer credit. Using Ajzen and Fishbein’s (2010) theory of planned behavior, the present study aims to determine which factors influence the adoption of risky consumer credit behavior. A total of 317 (post)graduate students from two major universities in Quebec (Canada) completed an electronic survey. Among other factors, consumer credit self-efficacy contributes significantly to reducing the likelihood of engaging in risky consumer credit behavior. Education programs must consider the importance of improving self-efficacy in the teaching of personal finances.
