Program Summary/Abstract Description

This session will highlight how a small school district can innovatively provide students with a global dual language immersion program, despite difficult finances and constraints. The program outlines a K-12 continuum for global education with a Language Leader program. Beginning with grades K-5, students learn Spanish in an immersion setting using a curriculum properly designed to include language and content lessons, focusing on different literacy approaches that have been adapted in order to address the acquisition of the target language. The innovative global framework has helped ensure high success, as Mount Airy City Schools is one of six districts in the state where 100% of our schools met or exceeded growth. Innovation doesn't have to be sacrificed to create excellence. Innovation and Excellence go hand-in-hand in Mount Airy City Schools.
