The Friday Roundtables: A Grassroots Model of Professional Learning and Democratic Practice

Session Abstract
We present the experiences of teachers in rural Ohio who organized a grassroots learning community. Participants will engage in this democratic model of teacher learning and reflective practice.
Target Audience
Faculty development professionals and teacher educators as well as practicing teachers will be interested in this session as we will be discussing and presenting the potential impacts of a self-directed model of professional learning.
Learning Outcomes
• Participants will discuss and engage in a self-directed model of professional learning.
• Participants will discuss the educative impact of this model of learning and consider implications for their practice.
Session Description
The educators in this study came together and engaged in the hard work of any democracy: listening, arguing, debating, in a meaningful, focused and democratic learning experience they called the Friday Roundtable. This workshop presents the impact this self-directed model of professional learning had on a group of educators who were willing to allow the experience to help shape their teaching philosophy, practice and in some cases, life outlook. We will present the model and findings and then engage the participants in the model to discuss the implications for their practice. This model can serve as a vehicle for learning in other formal and informal settings.
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
