2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

TB3
Type of Presentation

Concurrent Session (45 minutes)

Session Abstract

By definition, colleges and universities are places of ongoing learning. This session presents a recent empirical study investigating workplace learning and professional development among college staff (i.e., non-faculty) employees.

Target Audience

Human resource professionals; those interested in professional development and continuing education; those interested in workplace learning; those who study institutions of higher education

Learning Outcomes

Those who attend this session will explore the nature of workplace learning in higher education. Session attendees will also evaluate the effectiveness of on-the-job training and investigate the disruptive nature of job change within an institution.

Session Description

Building and sustaining a career in higher education often requires responding to shifts in institutional priorities and being willing to (or having the desire to) change jobs within the institution. This presentation, and the study it is based on, focuses on the workplace learning experiences of staff (non-faculty) employees at a small college. Each participant had recently experienced a “significant” job change as a result of promotion, reorganization, or career development. Participants identified limited or non-existent training materials, insufficient interaction with those who had previously held the job, and moving into newly created jobs as particular challenges. Participants also described tensions between inefficient training strategies, the ever-present demands of responding quickly and accurately to student needs, and the steep learning curve of stepping into a new role. Ultimately, the presentation explores the nature of workplace learning in institutions of higher learning.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
