2013 Annual Conference

del 5 al 8 de November del 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

This qualitative study will examine reflections of adult amateur musicians after engaging in their first experiences in learning how to play jazz music.

Target Audience

Practitioners who work with adult artists and/or adult musicians.

Learning Outcomes

This session will use the beginning jazz music experience to help provide insight on how adults learning a new arts-related skill. Attendees to this session will be able to describe the specific characteristics of adult music learners, and develop deeper understandings of adult learning that are unique to music contexts, as well as shared among adult learning contexts in general.

Session Description

As the number of opportunities for adults to engage in art experiences increases, there is a growing need for practitioners to better understand their learners. This is particularly true in music, where research into adult learning processes is scarce. The purpose of this study is to examine the reflections of adult musicians experiencing jazz music for the first time; specifically, their motivations, barriers, and success in learning. Also of interest will be the processes these adults describe in acclimating themselves to the newness of playing jazz.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
