2013 Annual Conference

November 5–8, 2013

Lexington, KY

It is time to review the schedule for the placement of your session in the AAACE Agenda. This is the final draft of the Schedule. When you look up your name, use the detail listing to check what days/times you asked to be placed. This is a huge program and we can accommodate necessary changes in day and time now, but may not be able to do so after September 1, 2013 except in emergencies. Please carefully check your placement and send any requests to Ginger Phillips, AAACE Conference Planner with AAACE Session Change Request in the subject line. We will respond to your email, but it may take us up to a week to do so. Thanks for your help in "fine tuning" this agenda!

Session Abstract

We will explore courses for health professionals using staged self-directed learning methods as a way to foster life-long learning.

Target Audience

Practitioners, instructors, and students who are interested in learning how to facilitate life-long learning in graduates.

Learning Outcomes

An understanding of how self-directed learning can impact the quality of continuing education in health professions.

Session Description

Health career professionals must stay connected to continuing education at each stage of their career and work on diversifying their skills or filling personal knowledge gaps as technology evolves. Professional health educational programs strive to increase knowledge and competency of beginning practitioners to ensure that the highest level of patient care is always delivered. The other goal is produce graduates with developed skills that will continue to serve them well beyond the requirements of a particular college course or program. Incorporating staged self-directed learning methods allows educators to address required educational objectives, competencies, and outcomes as well as develop independent learning skills. These methods attempt to conciliate the educator’s critical need to pass on specific information to students in a new health profession career as well as developing them to be self-directed graduates.
