Perceptions of Adult Learners Towards an Intensive, Immersion-learning Program in Health and Biological Sciences

Session Abstract
A descriptive study of the variables influencing the perceptions students have toward intensive, immersion-learning programs for adult learners pursuing, or intending to pursue, careers in the health and biological sciences.
Target Audience
The session is designed primarily for professionals and students who are either pursuing, or who are planning to pursue, an accelerated program for adult learners to fulfill lower-division undergraduate course work.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of the key variables influencing the perception that adult students may have toward intensive, time-condensed, immersion-learning programs in California. Participants will also identify, analyze, and evaluate the similarities and differences that exist between the study’s findings and the findings of the current literature in the field.
Session Description
This session is a descriptive, four year study reflecting data collected from students and alumni of an intensive, time-condensed, immersion-learning program for adult learners. With closed- and open-ended questions, the survey data were administered with the following objectives in mind: (1) understanding the perception students and alumni have toward their overall academic experience with the program, (2) assessing the relevance of the program’s delivery format, and (3) evaluating the quality of the program’s instruction. In short, participants volunteered their responses to measure the nature of the program’s learning effectiveness, delivery format, and the quality of its instructors. This session will also discuss the importance of such data collection as a critical component to continuously evaluating and improving curriculum and delivery design.
