Attitudes of University Faculty Members About Adopting Campus Wides Distance Education Initiatives

Session Abstract
This session will present the findings of a recent qualitative study concerning faculty attitudes about the adoption and implementation of distance learning technologies at a traditional liberal arts oriented University.
Target Audience
Participants at this session should include academic affairs administrators and faculty members in higher education settings; college and university program administrators and support staff who have technical and development responsibilities related to distance education activities; staff development professionals; and other adult educators with interests in various forms of mediated instruction.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of this session participants will:
1) Become familiar with the themes and finds of recent research about faculty adoption of distance learning technology in higher education settings;
2) Develop an understanding of various administrative and instructional issues necessary to consider when moving from a face-to-face driven curriculum to one which readily encompasses distance-based learning initiatives; and
3) Have an opportunity to network with colleagues with similar interests in distance learning technologies and mediated learning course development strategies.
Session Description
This session will focus on providing attendees with research-based findings from a recent campus-wide study of faculty attitudes to the implementation of distance educations program at a traditional liberal arts institution. As more and more colleges and universities move into the world of mediated instruction, faculty members with a traditional orientation to providing face-to-face instruction, are being forced to think beyond the boundaries of their level of instructional competence and interests. This session will provide an examination of how one small liberal arts institution is currently addressing the challenges associated with making such an institution-wide transformation. Ten specific themes drawn from a study of fifty full time and adjunct liberal arts and professional program faculty members along with practical policy-related recommendations applicable to other higher education settings will be provided.
