Books and Babies: A Review of Literature at the Intersection of Adult Education and Motherhood

Session Abstract
The needs of nontraditional students are varied and expansive. This work reviews literature on one segment–motherhood and adult higher education–and provides insights for program planners, advisors, and faculty.
Target Audience
This session is intended to provide insights into the disproportionate representation of women, in particular mothers, throughout the academy. In looking at mothers as nontraditional students, this session will be of interest to those such as practitioners, researchers, program planners/developers, advisors, and faculty in higher education whose work relates to nontraditional adult students.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will leave the session with an overview of the literature on motherhood and adult higher education to provide insights into working with nontraditional students. This session will help explain the varied landscape of nontraditional students in higher education by uncovering the literature on one demographic – mothers – that has yet to be fully addressed in adult learning and teaching. As such, this session will assist participants to broaden their thinking and understanding of the diverse needs of nontraditional students.
Session Description
With the increase of diversity and adult nontraditional student enrollment in higher education, understanding the special needs and perspectives of those in the collegiate institution become exceptionally important for leaders and practitioners (Kasworm, 2003, 2005). By looking specifically at mothers as nontraditional students, this topic is particularly timely. Although increasingly attending higher education (National Center for Education Statistics, 1998), women, in particular mothers, are systematically not moving forward in equal rates as compared to their male counterparts (Wolfinger, Mason, & Goulden, 2008). One way to address this problem is to understand the literature at the intersection of motherhood and adult education. As such, this research provides an extension of scholarship on nontraditional adult students and motherhood, providing insight for stakeholders in higher education such as program planners, advisors, and faculty.
