Workshop in Participation Training: Learning Through Collaborative Planning and Dialogue

Session Abstract

Participation Training teaches group learning processes; it can be applied to any context defined by learners, reflecting a strong social justice framework. It honors learner experiences, fosters self-directedness and self-determination.

Target Audience

Educators, managers, human resource developers interested in retention, strong discourse communities, cooperative, collaborative work and learning and anyone involved in online coursework.Engaging learners in the content of their own learning influences commitment and success.
Capdeferro and Romero (2012) found that students involved in online group work are frequently frustrated by “asymmetric collaboration” among teammates, and “difficulties related to group organization, lack of shared goals", imbalance commitment and quality of individual contributions. “Preparing learners for collaboration through … development of social and group skills necessary to work effectively in a group will have a positive effect upon the collaborative experience.”

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:
• Examine and articulate ways in which personally-held assumptions influence beliefs and behaviors
• Identify and respond constructively to both stated and implied needs of the group
• Demonstrate competence as an actor in group service roles
• Identify and describe the development of group normative conditions
• Conduct discussion planning sessions in a timely and effective manner
• Separate planning a discussion from conducting the discussion
• Conduct a discussion according to the plan
• Consciously work towards the shared normative conditions described in Participation Training
• Provide and apply feedback to subsequent activities

Session Description

The proposed learning activity is for a workshop that employs the key instructional methods of Participation Training, a guided learn-by-doing introduction to applied group dynamics that has been part of the Adult Education curriculum at Indiana University since 1949. It is designed to develop participant skills and insights in two kinds of activities: (1) the process of identifying and practicing group role responsibilities that facilitate helping each other to analyze, understand, and evaluate ideas, and (2) the process of making group decisions collaboratively and intentionally. Adults returning to school face a variety of challenges to education, and many of these returning adults express feelings of isolation, and frustration with assigned group work, which is likely to have a negative influence on motivation and persistence.

Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
