Session Description

Addressing the career needs of undocumented youth or “Dreamers” who have significant barriers to equal access due to their legal status presents a pressing social justice issue. This presentation will empower school counselors to be better equipped to facilitate the development of these youths. The presentation will survey the contextual factors which impact undocumented youth, provide a theoretical framework that can be utilized to support undocumented students, and a case presentation.

Dr. Maureen Ponce, Ph.D., Northwood High School
Brief biographical sketch, to include educational background

Dr. Ponce has over 20 years of experience as a professional school counselor both at the middle and high school level. Dr. Ponce identifies not only as a school counselor but as a counselor educator and is passionate about promoting the counseling profession. As a school counselor, she works to support and empower “ALL” students. As a counselor educator and supervisor, Dr. Ponce has presented at national, regional, and state conferences on topics related to the intersection of diversity, counseling, and supervision, the mentoring relationship in counseling & supervision, and supporting college and career readiness through strengthening social-cognitive factors.

Dr. Ponce sits on various committees to include Vice-president for secondary level on the Maryland School Counseling Association, International Committee student member on the American Counseling Association, and a member of the MCPS School Counseling Services Advisory Council. Dr. Ponce has mentored new school counselors in MCPS. She also volunteers as a Troop Leader in Girl Scouts.

Dr. Ponce recently earned her Ph.D. in counseling education and supervision from Liberty University and her dissertation explored social-cognitive factors that influence college and career readiness. Dr. Ponce earned a post-masters’ certificate in counseling at-risk youth from John Hopkins University and a M.Ed. in counseling and development from George Mason University. Dr. Ponce holds a B.A. in History Education from The College of New Jersey.

Ms. Charlain Bailey, masters, Self-employed
Brief biographical sketch, to include educational background

Charlain Bailey worked as an educator and National Board Certified Counselor in Montgomery County Public Schools for 30 years. She currently serves as a mentor and College Counseling volunteer with Community Bridges Girls Leadership and Empowerment program in Montgomery County. Ms. Bailey has a BA in Art Education and a M. Ed in School Counseling.

Kristen Lorenz, MBA, Shepherd University
Brief biographical sketch, to include educational background

Kristen Lorenz is the Director of Admissions at Shepherd University. She has been at Shepherd for 7 years and previously worked in the marketing sector. Beyond managing the incoming enrollment of the University, Kristen takes great responsibility in educating youth on the importance of Higher Education and the birthright each student has to advancing his/her education.

Kristen earned a B.S. in Business Administration and an M.B.A. focusing in Public Management, both from Shepherd University.

Dr. Lois Jarman, PhD, Shepherd University
Brief biographical sketch, to include educational background

Dr. Jarman has been a world language educator for more than fifteen years. She has taught English, French, Spanish, and Latin on a secondary and post-secondary level. Dr. Jarman received her bachelor’s degree from Goucher College, her master’s degree from Hood College, and her doctoral degree in second language acquisition from Shenandoah University. Dr. Jarman has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and South America.
