AMB 3
DESCRIPTION

Our proposal is designed to demonstrate how students can understand, create, and implement programs and actions that are designed to achieve zero waste goals.  To accomplish this, three students will be presenting to explain how they have achieved significant waste reduction, not only at their school site, but for other community organizations as well.

An 8thgrade middle school student will discuss how the student led OC Recycles program, managed by an IEP English class, grew from starting a new recycling program, to the creation and implementation of a school site zero waste plan and program that has been embraced by the School District.

A 4thgrade elementary school student will discuss how the Recycling is OK program, designed and run by students, became the model for a “recycling consulting business”.

A 6thgrade elementary school student will discuss the district wide compost program that diverts over 80% of the food waste from lunch.

Attendees will see how the three programs presented, produce data that is provided to the city in order to meet diversion goals as well as education and outreach requirements.

Attendees to this session will see the results of three very successful school programs, as presented by the students involved.  This will come from the information provided, as well as a demonstration that a new generation is passionate, educated and experienced in making the reality of zero waste an effort that will be achieved… with their help.

Speaker Abstract

Taylor will discuss how the student-led OC Recycles program, managed in a Fundamental English class, collected data each week about recycling and trash volumes, along with contamination. He will detail how middle school students wrote a zero waste plan and have successfully transitioned the school site from plastic straws to paper.  He'll also talk about how, with the help of EDCO,  students switched the campus to 1:1 recycling; and through TerraCycle, students implemented chip bags and coffee capsule recycling. With the student-driven Zero Waste Plan fully implemented, Oak Crest Middle School would be on track to divert 95% of the waste generated each school year.

Speaker Abstract

As a 4th grade elementary school student, I will discuss how the Recycling is OK program, designed and run by students, became the model for a “recycling consulting business”. This year, me and thirty one 4thgrade students, created a business plan which started with going off-site to the Magdalena Ecke YMCA, and collecting data about their existing recycling efforts. With this data, we, the 4thgrade consultants evaluated and designed an improved system to increase recycling at the “Y”.  These recommendations were presented to the YMCA Board and demonstrated how the ‘Y” could improve recycle rates from 10% to over 60%.

Moderator Biography

Alice is a waste diversion champion for Encinitas Union School District, a National Green Ribbon School District. Working with several grades, Alice has piloted numerous waste diversion efforts for the district. She is responsible for putting in place the most comprehensive student-run campus-wide recycling and composting program in the district. Her programs required students to keep accurate data records and to codify best practices for use at other school sites. Most notably, Alice spearheaded a pilot student-driven environmental consultancy program where her fourth grade waste diversion experts gave professional guidance to their local YMCA which was accepted by its Board.
