Incorporating Student Code-Switching Into Literacy Instruction

Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10:00 AM–10:45 AM EDT
Wayland
Session Abstract

Instead of discouraging bilingual code-switching in classrooms, educators can facilitate academic success in English literacy by embracing students' unique linguistic ability.  To meet Common Core Standards, teachers can discuss speaking/writing for diverse purposes and audiences; use contrastive approaches to guide English grammar investigation; and encourage expressive oral/written narratives through code-switching.
