Discussions4Learning: An Oral Vocabulary and Language Program based on Fine Art
Session Abstract
This presentation provides participants with an overview of an evidence-based program that employs digitally projected fine art images and real-world photos to develop high-level Academic Vocabulary and Standard English. Each participant will receive a sample CD with 12 fine art images and 12 real-world photos along with 16 sample lessons.

Barbara Place, MA, Davis Curriculum and Research
Biographical Statement
Barbara Place has taught reading and language arts in English and Spanish, and has taught English, Spanish, and French to both children and adults. As a doctoral fellow at Boston University, she studied the acquisition of first and second languages in reading and writing. Barbara worked as a consultant, in conjunction with Simmons College and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, to help school districts across the country develop reading and language arts curricula, particularly for linguistic minority students. She has conducted research on using fine art images to teach oral vocabulary in conjunction with Clark University and has authored curriculum to support English learners.
