Speaker Abstract

The City of Hermosa Beach hosted the first community-wide garage sale on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018. The purpose of the garage sale was to assist residents in clearing out their garages to make room for their vehicles that may otherwise be parked in driveways and extending over the sidewalks.

Interested residents registered their house, building or block in advance of the event so that they were included in the garage sale map, advertising and donation pickups. Typically Hermosa Beach residents require a permit to host a garage sale which was waived for this event. The event was scheduled in coordination with the Los Angeles County Household Hazardous Waste Roundup on the same day in the City. Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army and Athens Waste Services were available at a drop-off location on the afternoon of the event for the collection/bulk pick-up of unwanted items.

The success of the coordinated garage sale has led to it becoming an annual event. This presentation will share the experience and lessons learned from planning and implementing the City of Hermosa Beach first community-wide garage sale. This information can assist other municipalities and community organizations in planning and hosting similar events to encourage reuse and reduce waste from entering the landfill.
