This presentation focuses on strategies for reinforcing the CCSS through the discussion of fine art images. Research-proven strategies will be demonstrated for: increasing academic vocabulary, promoting evidence-based discussions, and developing speaking and listening skills. The presentation will include lessons and images for teachers to use on their own,

Barbara Place, MA, Davis Curriculum and Research
Biographical Statement

Barbara Place has taught reading and language arts in English and Spanish, and has taught English, Spanish, and French to both children and adults. As a doctoral fellow at Boston University, she studied the acquisition of first and second languages in reading and writing. Barbara worked as a consultant, in conjunction with Simmons College and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, to help school districts across the country develop reading and language arts curricula, particularly for linguistic minority students. She has conducted research on using fine art images to teach oral vocabulary in conjunction with Clark University and has authored curriculum to support English learners.
