Gender Affirming Approach to Psychiatric Hospitalizations: Moving Toward an Affirmative TGNC Model
Workshop Description
As mental health moves toward an affirming care model, psychiatric hospitals are often lagging behind. Historically, TGNC folks are often misgendered and misunderstood in psychiatric practice. In this workshop, you will learn how to support TGNC people who are in psychiatric crisis and are hospitalized. Bringing experience from Garfield Park Behavioral Hospital in Chicago, workshop presenter will describe how the hospital has undergone a process to move away from damaging psychopathology and toward affirming practice. Presenter will share with the audience how and why Garfield Park Behavioral Hospital has created the nation's first LGBTQ inpatient psychiatric unit for adolescents. Topics that will be discussed: history of TGNC in psychiatric care, current state of mental health and TGNC people, survey results from TGNC people in inpatient care, creating change in a hospital setting, bio-psychosocial assessments, intake best practices, nursing care, and trends in evidenced-based individual, group, and family psychotherapy. Presentation is combination of lecture, small group discussion, and case study.
