Transforming Your Classroom as Your Students Transition
Workshop Description
It takes a special type of calling to become a teacher or school administrator. With this privilege comes great responsibility. For more than 30 years as a teacher, I have recognized and created a classroom environment that embraces gender diverse students and their innate expression without judgement or a desire to change them in any way. Many of these students’ parents have privately shared both their gratitude and concerns, for gender diverse students can no longer be silenced, bullied, or ignored. Instead of shying away from controversy, I have used it as an opportunity to lead by example and shared my practices with any colleague who would listen. When met with opposition, I made the conscience decision to continuously re-evaluate how I would approach these obstacles and move forward. These easy-to-use ideas are simple to implement in any classroom setting which will be offered during this interactive workshop.

D. M. Maynard, MS/MA, is a veteran teacher for 30+ years and the Founder/Director of Maynard’s W.I.S.D.O.M., Inc., an education service for teachers, administrators, parents/caregivers, and students. She has spoken at conferences within the U.S. and throughout the world, supporting gender diversity for children and giving voice to the partners of those in transition. Her published articles are: Introducing Gender Equality in the Early Childhood Classroom (2012) and The Magic of a Creative and Engaging Classroom (2013). Maynard's book, The Reflective Workbook for Partners of Transgender People: Your Transition as Your Partner Transitions, is now available with Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
