Autism Spectrum Disorder and Trans Youth: What is the Connection?

Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 2:00 PM–3:30 PM PDT
Salon C
Workshop Description

According to recent studies, between 8 to 10 percent of children and adolescents seen at gender clinics around the world meet the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder while approximately 20% have autism-like traits such as impaired social-communication skills or intense focus and attention to detail. There is an increasing amount of literature on the potential connection between the two diagnoses and the possible overlapping mental health concerns. We will review the proposed guidelines for care, discuss best practices and brainstorm strategies for intervention and treatment. Participants will have an opportunity to learn the latest research, share information and discuss a clinical vignette.
