Workshop Description

Motivated by gender-expansive students in their community, members of the Buckingham Browne and Nichols School have undertaken a number of initiatives that focus on creating a gender-inclusive school for all of their students. There is limited focus on how to make gender a developmentally appropriate topic for elementary aged students, and we are looking to grow resources for school communities. The session will provide a framework that looks to increase one’s understanding of the basics of gender and ways to introduce gender to students in grades Pre K-8. We will take an in-depth look at the strategies and programming that have successfully allowed BBN to be more inclusive towards gender-expansive youth, faculty, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. We will explore the comprehensive ways that BBN worked to develop classroom instruction, foster parent discussions, and create safer student club spaces.

Presenter Bio

Beth Chiasson is an educator at Buckingham Browne and Nichols, an independent school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Beth’s responsibility as the Lower School Support Services Coordinator is to ensure that each student is learning and flourishing in a nurturing and responsive school environment. Beth is also the co-chair of BBN’s Community Gender and Sexuality Alliance, a group that meets throughout the year to focus on making sure that all students, faculty, and families feel safe and supported. Beth has worked extensively with the BBN to create initiatives that advance the school’s work around gender to support gender-expansive youth.
