The ESL Garden: Creating Common Ground for the Common Core

Session Abstract

This presentation will cover our experiences this past year with regards to planning and constructing a garden at the JFK Middle School in Waltham. Our focus will be the ways in which we were able to align the project to core content in science, social studies and math in grades 6, 7, and 8. We will share some of the lessons, units and excursions that were enhanced by the garden project.

Mr. Damian was born and raised in Cambridge, graduated from Northeastern University, and has been working with ESL students in Boston and Waltham for the past three years.

 Viviana Borges teaches ESL science at the JFK Elementary School in Waltham. Mrs. Borges puts forth extraordinary effort in making her curriculum engaging and tangible for her students.

Anne ConsolettiSchultz, Waltham Public Schools
Biographical Statement

Anne Consoletti teaches ESL social studies at JFK Middle School in Waltham, and is a professor at Bunker Hill Community College. Anne also participates in teacher mentoring at the JFK, a program designed to help new teachers learn from the experienced educators in their disciplines.
